Occupation Outlook
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of interpreters and translators, including immigration and federal court interpreters, is projected to grow by 24% from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations. This growth is fueled by the expanding need for interpretation services in healthcare settings, legal environments, and other fields, particularly in multilingual communities.
Interpreter vs. Translator?
An immigration and federal court interpreter facilitates accurate verbal communication between non-English-speaking individuals and judges, attorneys, government officials, and other participants in legal proceedings. The interpreter’s responsibility is to faithfully convey the speaker’s words, meaning, tone, and intent without adding, omitting, or altering information, while maintaining impartiality and confidentiality. A legal translator, on the other hand, works primarily with written documents, such as court records, affidavits, and immigration forms. Written translation is a distinct skill that requires specialized training.
Program Overview
Immigration and Federal Court Interpreter Training Program
This 45-hour, 7-week Immigration Interpreter Certificate Training Program was developed to enable participants to become competent interpreters for Immigration – Federal Court services. The program is offered in the following languages:
- Arabic
- Chinese (Mandarin)
- Haitian Creole
- Portuguese
- Russian
- Spanish
This program prepares interpreters to work in a variety of immigration-related contexts, including immigration relief interviews, attorney-client meetings, asylum interviews, immigration court proceedings, EOIR (Executive Office for Immigration Review) hearings, and other legal and immigration proceedings.
THE PROGRAM CONSISTS OF 2 PARTS:
- Immigration Interpreter Core Competencies (delivered in English; it covers basic concepts and strategies) – 23 hours
- Interpreting Practice (it includes language practice and role-plays in the target language) – 22 hours
Upon successful completion, students will receive a Certificate of Completion.
What You Will Learn
Our curriculum combines foundational interpreting techniques with immigration-specific knowledge to prepare students for professional practice.
Throughout the program, you will study:
Professional Foundations
Understand the role and responsibilities of an immigration interpreter, professional
expectations, and ethical decision-making.
Immigration Terminology
Develop familiarity with immigration vocabulary, legal terminology, government
agencies, forms, and commonly used expressions encountered during immigration-
related interactions.
Consecutive Interpreting
Master one of the most widely used interpreting methods through structured practice
focused on accuracy, memory retention, and message completeness.
Sight Translation
Learn techniques for orally interpreting written immigration-related documents while
maintaining their intended meaning.
Interpreter Ethics
Explore the principles that guide professional interpreters, including:
- Accuracy
- Confidentiality
- Impartiality
- Professional conduct
- Cultural sensitivity
- Ethical decision-making
Cultural Competency
Gain a deeper understanding of how cultural differences influence communication and
learn strategies for facilitating respectful interactions.
Practical Simulations

real-world immigration interpreting scenarios.
Program Dates
October 12th to November 25, 2026
Certificate of Completion
Students who successfully complete the Immigration Interpreter Training Program receive an AHDPG Certificate of Completion.
While there is currently no nationally recognized certification examination specifically for immigration interpreters, employers frequently seek individuals who have completed formal interpreter training and can demonstrate professional interpreting skills, ethical judgment, and language proficiency.
This program is designed to help students develop those competencies and prepare for opportunities within the field.
Class Structure
The Immigration and Federal Court Interpreter Program is for bilingual individuals who can speak, read, and write English and one additional language fluently. The program is delivered via live Zoom sessions.
This 45-hour, 7-week program meets on the following schedule:
- Mondays (6:30 PM – 9:30 PM ET): Immigration Interpreter Core Competencies
- Wednesdays (6:30 PM – 9:30 PM ET): Interpreting Practice
PHASE 1: Initial Assessment
To be accepted into the program, applicants must complete an oral language assessment pre-test and demonstrate fluency in English and the target language. The assessment will be administered orally by phone by our language coach. Participants will be asked to interpret sentences from English into the target language and from the target language into English.

Phase 2: Implementation
Our Immigration and Federal Court Interpreter Training course uses a variety of interactive learning techniques to develop students’ interpreting skills and expand their vocabulary in English and the target language.
Course activities include, but are not limited to:
- Interactive lectures

- Specialized vocabulary review
- Role-plays

- Listening comprehension exercises
- Memory exercises
- Peer monitoring and critique
- Quizzes
Phase 3: Final Assessment
At the end of the course, students will take final oral and written tests. Final test scores will determine the level of competency skills acquired by the participants and their overall performance. Upon successful completion of the Immigration and Federal Court Interpreter Training Program and passing the final oral and written tests, students will receive a Certificate of Completion.
Homework
Homework will focus on specific immigration and federal court interpreting topics and will include learning specialized vocabulary, memory exercises, and practicing interpreting skills. Students will review their homework with an instructor in class.
Coursework
The Online Immigration – Federal Court Interpreter Training Course is divided into two comprehensive parts:
Immigration and Federal Court Interpreter Core Competency (English Delivery)
Understand the fundamental concepts and strategies of immigration and federal court interpreting, focusing on effective communication, confidentiality, and professional ethics.
Language Coaching (Target Language)
Develop proficiency in interpreting immigration, legal, and federal court terminology in your chosen target language. Participate in hands-on language practice and role-play scenarios that reflect real-world immigration interviews, attorney-client meetings, court proceedings, and other legal settings.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Identify common communication barriers in immigration and federal court settings and apply strategies to overcome them.
- Understand and demonstrate the roles and responsibilities of an immigration and federal court interpreter in attorney-client meetings, immigration interviews, court proceedings, and other legal settings.
- Develop proficiency in immigration, legal, and court-related terminology in English and your target language.
- Apply consecutive interpreting and sight translation techniques while accurately conveying the meaning, context, and intent of spoken and written communication.
- Interpret in accordance with professional standards of accuracy, confidentiality, impartiality, cultural sensitivity, and ethical conduct.
