Research Training Programs

The Medical Scribe Education Review Board (MSERB) has developed an approval program for medical scribe training programs. The goal of this program is to elevate the level of scribe training available and become an industry benchmark to ensure prospective students and healthcare employers from approved programs are well-trained and job ready.

To achieve approval, programs must comply with specific educational and institutional criteria as established by the Medical Scribe Education Review Board (MSERB). To be considered for program approval, each program must meet the following requirements:

1. Comprehensive Curriculum
   • Include a set of core competencies necessary to train and develop competently trained medical scribes to thrive in today’s healthcare marketplace and successfully lead candidates to become Certified Medical Scribe Professionals (CMSPs).
2. Expert Faculty
   • Be led by individuals with sufficient subject matter expertise and experience sufficient to mentor, monitor, and develop competently trained medical scribes. Their expertise will guide students through the program and provide valuable insights and mentorship.
3. Hands-On Experience
   • Include an element of hands-on instruction and/or simulations allowing students to practice real-life scenarios they will encounter as medical scribes. This practical experience will ensure students are well-prepared for the demands of the role.
4. Industry Partnerships
   • Have established strong partnerships with leading healthcare facilities and industry experts to ensure the program aligns with the latest industry standards and practices. This ensures that graduates are equipped with the skills required to meet the evolving needs of the healthcare sector and provides pathways to employment.
5. Sound Financial Resources
   • Demonstrate solid financial footing and has clear policies and procedures in place to support student success.

As Medical Scribes are tomorrow’s Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and other healthcare team members we further recommend that prospective students look for training programs that provide well-rounded training in the areas of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, pharmacology, disease processes, labs, and HIPAA and HITECH. The eight pillars of knowledge that support long-term career success in healthcare. We also caution students to understand the difference between being a medical transcriptionist and being a medical scribe – they are not the same.

Please note that no educational program can offer “certification.” While a program may provide its graduates with a certificate of completion, this is not the same as either the Apprentice Medical Scribe Professional (AMSP^TM) or the Certified Medical Scribe Professional (CMSP^TM) credentials that are recognized throughout the industry and achieved only through successful completion of the Medical Scribe Certification Exam (MSCE^TM).
